After NGT order, govt closes down 292 mines in Chittorgarh

Jaipur: Following National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) order to to close down 292 small mines falling within the municipal area of Chittorgarh, the state mining department has complied with the order and shut down the mines with immediate effect. The order was issued on February 12.

The state may also take legal opinion in the matter. In its order, the NGT stated, "In compliance of our earlier order the director geology and mines, government of Rajasthan and the additional director of the department are present in person. After hearing the submissions made by director geology and mines, we direct that the additional director to file a personal affidavit giving out full details and submit the same before the Tribunal within one week.

However, as we have been informed that in compliance of our earlier order dated March 8, 2019, 77 mines, have been closed down but 292 mines falling within municipal area are still operating. Accordingly, we direct that remaining 292 mines falling within the municipal area, as per the report of Survey General of India, be also closed down forthwith. The compliance in this regard should be done and mentioned in the affidavit which is to be filed by the additional director, it added.

The next date for hearing in the matter is February 28. Earlier, 77 mines were closed down by the state's mining department.
