After Chansad, another Padra village gives land for bullet train project

Vadodara: In a major relief to the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) – the implementing agency for the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train project – more villages now are coming forward to hand over land for the project.

After Chansad village of Padra taluka which became the first such village to seek consent award for land acquisition for the project, farmers of Shihor, another village of Padra taluka neighbouring Chansad, have also adopted a similar stand by expressing their readiness for the land acquisition process. Govt. to revamp panel on land reform

The people’s movement Ekta Parishad cut short its march of 25,000 landless and tribal people from Gwalior to Delhi last Saturday after the Centre promised to reconstitute the National Taskforce on Land Reforms. The march had been launched on October 2. Read more

Declare Western Ghats as Eco-Sensitive Area: Petition urges Karnataka CM

Campaigning organisation Jhatkaa has started an online petition, urging Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy to declare the Western Ghats as an eco-sensitive area (ESA), with the other five states agreeing to do so.

In September, it was reported that the Karnataka was not agreeing to the Centre’s draft notification to declare the ghats as an eco-sensitive area. The first notification in 2014 had made 56,825 sq km of the Western Ghats in six states — including Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu — eco-sensitive. Declaring the region as eco-sensitive prohibits activities like mining or setting up of red category industries that pollute the environment. Read more
