Samata and mm&P participated in the conference organised by the Indian Association of Women's Studies at Goa from 3rd to 6th May. We were invited to participate in the conference and Bhanu was asked to make a presentation on the Impacts of Development and Displacement on Women in mining as part of the thematic sessions. Bhagya from Karnataka participated on behalf of Sakhi along with her team members representing the issues concerning women in the iron ore and granite mines in Hospet-Bellary. We participated in the panel presentations and gave our recommendations to the IAWS on the need for including gender perspective vis-a-vis development induced displacement, tribal women's livelihoods and lives with regard to mining, dams, power and other projects and the increasing influence of the international mining lobbies, foreign direct investments, free trade and privatisation issues which are also important issues for women's studies and women's research concerns in India.
