Regional level consultation – Chaibasa

Regional Level Consultation covering the states of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal was conducted in Chaibasa on 24th August, 2019. The consultation was attended by 74 participants from the 4 states. This Eastern belt of India is extremely infected by mineral resource exploitation leading to marginalized local communities. In this context, the consultation focused on intense discussion on issues relating to women and children in mining areas, District Mineral Foundations, Illegal Mining, PESA and the Vth Schedule. Representatives from the 4 states- Mr. Rajesh Tripathi from Chhattisgarh, Mukesh Birua from Jharkhand, Mr. Deme Oram from Odisha and Mr. Swaraj Das from West Bengal gave insights into the issues in their areas. It has been made clear from the discussions that unspent money in the DMFs, poor working conditions in the mining areas affecting women and children, lack of schooling for children, huge amounts of illegal mining and other atrocities. The consultation agreed on advocating and holding discussions with the parliamentarians to address these issues.
